Today in Pop Culture History: Here's Looking at You, Kid

A Friday only Uppers edition!

16 September 1924: Betty Joan Perske was born. You probably know her as Lauren Bacall. She won a Tony, a Golden Globe, and has been nominated for an Oscar. Noted films include the noirs To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep, and one of my favorite (probably sexist, but I don't care) comedies, How to Marry a Millionaire. But she's probably best known in pop culture for her epic love affair with this guy:

He called her "Baby." Probably also sexist, but again, I don't care.

One-hit wonder Bertie Higgins's "Key Largo" is a pop culture paean to the couple. It's super cheesy, but once more, Jimmy crack corn, and I don't care. Here's a painfully goofy YouTube montage video that has some good stills of Bogie and Bacall. It's worth it just for the opening shot of the cover of Bertie's album.
