Today in Pop Culture History: Grisly Automotive Deaths Aplenty!

Downer(s)
14 September 1927: Isadora Duncan, who basically invented modern dance, died 84 years ago today. She was quite the fashion plate, favoring long flowing scarves, that, unfortunately, can get caught in the wheels of sports cars and throw one from the car, nearly decapitating one with the force of one's stylishness. And that's what happened to Isadora in Nice. Pop culture extra: Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events features triplets named Isadora and Duncan (and Quig) Quagmire. Hee.

14 September 1982: Grace Kelly, at this point Princess Grace, suffered a stroke and drove her car right off a cliff. Very sad, and reportedly royally (no pun intended) traumatized her daughter Stephanie, who was in the car. She's all over pop culture, including fashion: her wedding dress inspired Kate Middleton's. She was also one of Hitchcock's icy blonde muses. My favorite Kelly/Hitch collaboration? It's close, but To Catch a Thief.

  2. No, no I did not. But if the tagline doesn't read: She was in a convertible, and then her body became a convertible, I shall boycott it.

  3. Which apparently wasn't true after all, but I don't care. I stand by my verse. I hope they call me to consult on the film.
